We love it when a plan comes together, and since launch last April that has been the case for over 500 women – whether via placements, job roles or training opportunities through us. Hopscotch Hotshots is our way of saying ‘high five’ to one of those candidates each month; celebrating a woman with a positive story to tell who’s now well on her way in her new job with a little bit of initial help from yours truly.
This month’s Hotshot is Sila, hailing from Melbourne with a ten-year background in writing and events. Here’s how her story panned out…
“Hello! My name is Sila and I moved to the UAE just over two and a half years ago from Melbourne, Australia. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Writing and Communications and for the past 10 years have developed my career as a writer and events professional. Since my move to the UAE I worked on several major events projects in the aviation industry. I spent a lot of my time travelling throughout the UK and Europe as part of my job, adding 11 more countries to my international portfolio and overcoming language, cultural and geographical challenges.
Knowing my contracted term was coming to an end in my previous role and eager for a new challenge, I took the initiative and began to search for my next opportunity, not long after my contract ended I was placed into my current role by Hopscotch. There are a plethora of jobs and roles advertised out there on the web and it’s essential to be selective and take the time to curate your cover letter and CV accordingly. Hopscotch helped me by having a clear and concise job description advertised and a user-friendly application system via their website. They had the ideal role advertised for me and I possessed all the qualities and experience the position required, so I tailored my resume and applied through their website. I was pleased with the prompt follow-up process after my application and not long after, I began my new job.
Being new to the industry and company, it’s been an exciting and challenging journey. I am really enjoying my role and the company I am working for. Being placed in an organization that has offices and initiatives internationally has really broadened my horizons, and the possibilities for growth on a professional and personal level are endless. I’ve been given the opportunity to gain an understanding of all aspects of the business and tasked with a wide range of duties. No two days are the same, which is I what I really love about my role.
As Oprah notably quoted, “I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” Always be prepared and keep your heart open, because you never know how, when and where that next opportunity will come your way –sometimes the biggest gifts come in the smallest packages!”
